Children sure love snacks. But timing can make a difference in the rest of your time with the children. In one afternoon club that I especially remember, we changed snacktime from before club to after club because of some discipline problems we were having. Knowing that snacktime could be cancelled at the teacher’s discretion can make a difference in the children’s behavior, but my real concern was that we were “fuelling them up” before club with the sugar-laced goodies - in both the cookies and the juice. This gave many of the children more energy than they could handle. And remember that some children react even more severely than others to a good dose of sugar. The other option, of course, is to find a snack that doesn't have so much sugar - like fruit and milk. But switching to after club seems to be the way to go in most situations, and was part of the solution in our club.
